A Note From Your AMS
February is considered the month for love because Valentine’s Day falls on the fourteenth of the month. I will refrain from sharing the history of this day of celebrating love because of its sketchy origins. Nevertheless, I would encourage all men to shower their wives with appropriate gifts to show her how much you love and appreciate her. Choosing not to do so may end in disastrous results.
The word “love” in today’s world has many definitions. We use the word “love” to describe our fondness for various things. I love cheeseburgers, but not the same way I love my wife. I love sports, but my love for sports shouldn’t outweigh my love for my spouse. Our love for things shouldn’t be deeper than our love for people. In all actuality, love is the supreme emotion of the human heart and unless it is directed correctly our love will be displaced.
As Christians, the way we love others is directly linked by how we love God. Matthew 22:37-39 says, “Jesus said to them, ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments hang all the Law and Prophets.” God’s command is for us is to love Him supremely! Once we condition our hearts to love him with every fiber of our being, we then can love others sufficiently.
True love doesn’t demand but rather sacrifices. John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” True love sacrifices on behalf of that which it loves. God in His eternal love for mankind gave His Son as a sacrifice for our sins. Jesus also said in John 15:13, “Greater love has no man than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.” We were loved so much by God that He allowed His Son to die an excruciating death on a cruel Roman cross and to be resurrected from the dead to save us from our sins so that we could spend eternity with Him forever! Wow, what an example of true love for you and me to follow!
Once we have our love fixed supremely on God, we are better equipped to love one another. I would have never known what true love is until I began to love God. My prayer for the members of the Lake Cumberland Baptist Association and myself is that we would love God supremely and love others as we love ourselves. In doing so we will be obedient to the two greatest commandments in the Bible.
By His Love,
Bro. Tommy
